Summer Retreat 2024 Retrospective

VMI goes to Zermatt! Our annual summer retreat returned in full swing in September 2024, with two groups of 40 scientific staff enjoying four unforgettable days in Zermatt. The retreat was filled with engaging scientific discussions, team-building activities, and breathtaking explorations, all under the watchful eye of the majestic Matterhorn!

Welcome Activities

We kicked things off with a fast-paced round of scientific speed dating—two rounds of 5-minute conversations that got everyone connecting and sharing their research in record time! But the real fun began with an adventurous scavenger hunt through the stunning landscapes of Zermatt. Armed with a Toblerone bar, teams of four raced to solve riddles and snap photos at iconic spots around town, turning exploration into friendly competition and bonding with each other while soaking in the beauty of the Swiss Alps. The excitement didn’t stop there! We wrapped up the day with a pub quiz. Two intense rounds of trivia had everyone on their toes, especially the final round focused on famous mountains.

Leisure Days

Each retreat featured two full days packed with exciting leisure activities. Participants split into groups to fully enjoy the breathtaking mountain scenery of Zermatt. For the adventurers, there was mountaineering on the Breithorn, Switzerland’s easiest 4,000-meter peak—but still a thrilling and challenging experience! Hikers looking for a tough trek took on the steep ascent to Gornergrat, rewarded with incredible panoramic views at the top. Those opting for a more relaxed pace explored the picturesque trails to Schwarzsee or wandered through the stunning Gorner Gorge.

Scientific Programme

The third day of each retreat was dedicated to the scientific programme. Participants gave talks on topics ranging from online algorithms and realistic rendering to the use of machine learning for medical diagnostic - and also hosted workshops on breaking large language models, the Tamarin protocol verifier, hacking remotely-controlled devices or the art of making presentations.

Last Impressions

As each retreat drew to a close, we gathered for a delightful three-course farewell dinner, celebrating the camaraderie and knowledge gained over the past few days. Thank you to everyone who made this retreat in the most iconic mountain village of Switzerland a success! If you couldn’t make it this year, keep an eye out for next year’s event – we can’t wait to see you there!
